Emergency Management - A Postmodern Tumult for the 21st Century

The 21st century is likely to be witness to an unprecedented increase in natural & anthropogenic disasters.

Effective emergency management will be contingent on coming to terms with the inextricable linkages between combating climate change, reducing global poverty and mitigating intra & international inequity.

As far as we know, human beings have never before faced a challenge of this magnitude.

The attack in New York on 9/11 (2001) and, most recently, the complex humanitarian disaster caused by the Haiti earthquake are emblematic of the challenges all of us who have an interest in emergency management will have to face in the coming years.

We are likely to see a dissolving of the traditional boundaries between emergency service workers and health professionals with a reconceptualisation of the role & skills requirements of all these groups. Old definitions will have to be jettisoned and new skill sets defined, taught & developed. The very language we use to describe & talk about emergency management will have to change. There is no doubt that major incident management is an emergent profession.

How we respond to all of these imperatives will be a test of our claim to have established the fundamentals of a global civilisation.

Changing Emergency Management Environment – Evolution Not Revolution

Clinical Emergency Management – Dr Stephen Luke MStJ

The role of St John providing pre-hospital health care services at events and during emergency responses, to include:

  • our proven ability to assist in times of need, including the development and maturation of our ACMT and clinical assistance models
  • our event and emergency response planning framework, including surge capacity and equipment / vehicle compliance with standards
  • the implications of this for the SHERP and the potential that St John has to play a more formal role / be recognised for the role that we already play

25/06/2010 13:00 - 14:30 Seminar6 - Volunteering (Member Welfare)

This session will focus on the impact of stressful situations and three approaches to member welfare that are currently being used by St John in a number of places – Peer Support, Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and Chaplaincy.

‘She’ll be right mate’
‘This feeling will pass’
‘I know how you feel’
‘I’m OK – this is just a rough patch’

Have you heard any of these lately? While the Australian way is to be a trooper and not admit when you’re struggling emotionally, these expressions are hardly best practice when it comes to looking after ourselves or our colleagues.

Our sense of health and wellbeing is impacted by our environment and events that happen around us. Thankfully we as a community are getting better at identifying and responding to people in need of support. As an organisation we are committed to supporting the emotional wellbeing of our members.
